Media Mobilizing Project of Philadelphia Independent Media Center

To develop online digital newscasts for Philadelphia’s immigrant community and to distribute them via the new citywide wireless platform.

Date Awarded: 05/16/2007
Amount: $150,000.00
Grant Period: 06/01/2007 to 03/31/2009
Program: Knight News Challenge
Community: Transformation Fund

The Media Mobilizing Project of the Philadelphia Independent Media Center teaches new media techniques to disenfranchised people of Philadelphia. This grant will enable the project to train 40 immigrants in eight different workshops to shoot video news segments that could be uploaded to the web and viewed anywhere via the city’s wireless network. A web site will be created to support the videos. A documentary produced about the project will be shown at a city-wide screening. The grant also will create an instruction manual about news video production for the Internet and a toolkit to help other cities replicate the project’s use of Wi-Fi. The project will work with Juntos, a coalition of immigrant taxi drivers, Wireless Philadelphia and possibly Temple University’s Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab. The grantee will blog about the project.
