To meet the growing demand for job-related services by replacing old computers, increasing bandwidth and creating a new Job Center in the Main Library
Date Awarded: 09/14/2009
Amount: $804,100.00
Grant Period: 10/01/2009 to 10/31/2010
Program: Communities Program
Community: Charlotte
The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County has served the community for more than 100 years. Since 1994, when it opened its virtual library, it has been nationally recognized as a leader in providing public Internet access. It is the largest provider of Internet/computer access in the county. The library will convert space in its Main Library and buy new computers to create a new 7,500-square-foot Job Center. Knight’s dollars would buy the additional computers needed and to upgrade bandwidth across the system. The new Job Center would allow increased computer access time – from one hour to three hours – as well as serve more users. The library expects to serve as many as 22,500 people in the first year.
